Raka Quinary outshines rivals at Michelangelo Awards
published on:

There has been a long-standing - but friendly - rivalry between the different wines at RAKA. The most popular wines turned out to be the Biography Shiraz (the winemaker, Josef Dreyer’s favourite) and the Quinary. The Quinary is a Bordeaux style blend comprising all five the Bordeaux varieties (which is much favoured by Piet Dreyer, owner of RAKA wines).

RAKA Figurehead, a ‘Bordeaux-meets-Cape-Winelands’ Cape Blend is the choice of Piet’s wife Elna, while the tasting room staff firmly supports the Pinotage and Sangiovese. Jorika supports her father and the Quinary while viticulturist Pieter Dreyer Jnr is in favour of his brother’s choice, the Shiraz as “it is giving me the least trouble in the vineyard”.

If wine competition trophies and medals are anything to go by, the Biography Shiraz seems to be the winner. Not only has it won double gold from Veritas in its maiden year, but apart from many double gold, gold and silver medals at various competitions, it is also a past winner of the Michelangelo International Trophy for Best Red Wine on Show and the Best Red Wine Trophy at the Fairbairn Capital Trophy Show (currently the Old Mutual Trophy Show). It has also won Top 100 SA wines for 5 years in a row.

The RAKA Quinary, itself a 3-time winner of the Top 100 SA wines, has quite a collection of gold, silver and double gold wins to its credit. This year, however, it outshone its rivals at the Michelangelo International Competition by winning a double gold medal.

The RAKA Quinary 2014 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (41%), Merlot (35%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Petit Verdot (7%), Malbec (5%) and is described as a wine of deep red colour with blackcurrant  and cherry on the nose, a well structured, pure palate  and a lingering fruity aftertaste. It is a wine worthy of double gold status, outdoing for once the Raka Biography Shiraz which won gold.

The usually underrated RAKA Pinotage 2015, an elegant and silky-smooth wine with subtle wood and well integrated tannins, was crowned with silver, much to the delight of its admirers and the tasting room staff.
